When it comes to Corporate Social Responsibility, one of the best places to invest is education. On June 4, 2010, Great Eastern Energy teamed up with America SCORES New York—a non-profit organization using soccer and poetry to develop healthy habits and increase literacy among urban youth–to beautify P.S. 192 in West Harlem. America SCORES currently fosters over 4,000 “poet-athletes” around the country–bringing inspiration, literary and teamwork opportunities to at-risk children in over 200 urban public elementary and middle schools nationwide.
First, America SCORES New York organized a wonderful lunch which provided GEE employees with the “energy” to enjoy a meaningful Friday out of the office. After that, GEE and America SCORES New York facilitators participated in numerous ice breakers to help make everybody more comfortable and keep the team morale high. Then it was time to get to work and everyone painted murals with inspirational quotes and bright colors to help bring additional light to the hallways.
Finally it was time to kick back (literally) with a basic soccer lesson on the school grounds, followed by a trip to the famous Londel’s, located on the threshold of Striver’s Row, a historical section of Harlem. GEE employees sampled delicious soul food cuisine and a drink or two courtesy of the Managing Partner, Allan Brenner, and CEO, Matthew Lanfear. In addition, Great Eastern Energy donated $3,000 to America SCORES to assist in their ongoing initiatives.
